Science Researcher Visionary Program

Purpose:

(1) Activate the creation of innovation in science and technology in Japan.

(2) Develop innovation leaders who can create value based on research findings and promote and continue corporate business development in Japan and overseas.

Overview

The modern world faces many major challenges. While these challenges will not be easy to resolve, they are also potentially great business opportunities. If ambitious business development can lead to solutions, such efforts will surely advance global and human development.

In this program, through classes, group work, and such, students will develop knowledge, understanding, communication skills, and practical skills needed in the process of developing business, based on research findings and ideas. (Basic Course)

Also, those who wish can pragmatically learn the process of transforming a corporate issue or challenge into a project or business, together with corporate researchers. (Advanced Course)

This add-on program enables students to learn the process of taking the advanced research skills and expertise that they have acquired from their specialized educational curriculum (undergraduate and/or graduate school) and making use of it in society.

Course Overview

Basic Course:

Acquire basic knowledge necessary for introducing technology into society (such as patents, ethics, law, marketing, presentations, and social science). Also, experience project start-up and promotion via business planning. Teams selected for their presentation can participate in overseas study trip.

Persons who have not participated in past educational programs sponsored by this organization, specifically the Practical Research Leader Program, EDGE Program, and Doctor's Visionary Program, are required to take this course.

Advanced Course:

If they wish, those who complete the Basic Course can, together with young corporate researchers, validate business hypotheses and create prototypes. And while receiving advice from experts, they can repeatedly review plans. Lastly, through SRI International study trip, the team selected will increase the feasibility of their plan.

Persons who have participated in past educational programs sponsored by this organization, specifically the Practical Research Leader Program, EDGE Program, and Doctor's Visionary Program, can take this course.

Eligible Participants (Both Courses)

Students currently enrolled at Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology, University of Electro-Communications, or Tokyo University of Foreign Studies (master's or doctoral program, undergraduate school), postdoctoral researchers, and company participants

When I participated in Doctor's Visionary Promotion, my thoughts regarding business changed. My former image of business was that "business = start a company," a world unrelated to job-seeker me. However, by participating in this plan, I was able to form a specific image of myself in my future job. Even now, actually working for a manufacture, I feel daily that it is important to think from this viewpoint: "How can I connect my research to product development and to the business that delivers products to consumers?" Also, in Doctor's Visionary Promotion, I was able to meet a lot of enthusiastic colleagues. I felt that the time I spent in discussion with members thinking about microbial fermentation-related business, with members who accompanied me to the study trip in Vietnam, and with students of Can Tho University was truly valuable.
