The 9th Chemical Science and Society Summit was held on September 19-22, 2023

Chemical Science and Society Summitは日本、イギリス、ドイツ、中国、アメリカのそれぞれの化学会およびFunding Agencyが協賛し、毎年各国持ち回りで開催されています。本年は、「Chemistry for Sustainable Food: Challenges and Perspective(持続可能な食料のための化学：課題と展望)」がテーマとなり、日本化学会常務理事の澤本光男先生（京都大学名誉教授・中部大学教授）のご指名により、私がリーダーとして、本会の運営を進めさせていただきました。Summit初日には日本化学会会長の菅裕明先生（東京大学教授）にもご出席いただき、各国からの参加者と交流を深めました。20日、22日はテーマ毎に活発な意見交換が進められました。持続可能な食料というテーマは非常に広範な学術領域を包含するだけではなく、国や地域による考え方の相違、食と言うものが意味するところの概念の広さなど、非常に複雑で多岐に及ぶ課題であることを再認識することができました。いずれにしても、食も人間も分子の機能的な集合体であることは間違いなく、物質を総合的に扱う「化学」の役割がますます重要になっています。これまでの限られた概念を払拭し、化学が貢献する世界をさらに広げて行く取り組みが大事だと思います。本議論の内容は白書としてまとめられ公開されることとなりました。

The Chemical Science and Society Summit is sponsored by the Chemical Societies and Funding Agencies of Japan, the United Kingdom, Germany, China, and the United States, and is held annually on a rotating basis in each country. This year, the theme was "Chemistry for Sustainable Food: Challenges and Perspective" and I was appointed by Dr. Mitsuo Sawamoto (Professor Emeritus, Kyoto University and Professor, Chubu University), Executive Director of the Chemical Society of Japan, to lead the meeting. On the first day of the Summit, Dr. Hiroaki Suga, President of the Chemical Society of Japan (Professor of the University of Tokyo), attended the Summit and deepened exchanges with participants from various countries. We were able to reaffirm that the theme of sustainable food not only encompasses a very broad range of academic fields, but is also a very complex and wide-ranging issue, including differences in thinking among countries and regions, and the broad concept of what is meant by the word "food". In any case, there is no doubt that both food and people are molecular functional aggregates and the role of "chemistry," which deals with substances in a comprehensive manner, is becoming increasingly important. I think it is important to dispel the limited concepts we have had so far, and to work to further expand the world to which chemistry can contribute. The contents of this discussion will be compiled into a white paper and made publicly available.
