学長告辞

卒業生、修了生の皆さん、誠におめでとうございます。

　本日この日を迎えられた皆さんは、それぞれが大学生活を通じて多くの経験を積み重ね、重要な課題に取り組み、研究や学修に力を尽くし、一つの大きな目標を達成されました。心から敬意を表するとともに、皆さんの門出を心よりお祝い申し上げます。

　卒業・修了は、皆さんにとって生涯忘れることのできない大きな節目であり、これからの人生の新たな出発点でもあります。そしてこれからも皆さんは、いくつもの重要な節目に直面し、その都度、自らの意思で決断しながら前へ進んでいくことになるでしょう。

　私自身もこれまでの人生の中で、いくつか大きな岐路となる選択を経験してきました。その一つが、今から二十年ほど前、大学教員として研究を続けていた自分の研究成果を基盤に、いわゆるスタートアップというものを創業したときのことです。それは正直に申し上げれば、決して皆さんへの模範となるような話ではありません。むしろ反省すべき点ばかりの、不完全なところから始まった、今から思えば無謀とも言える挑戦でした。

　当時、私は自分の専門とする化学反応に関する研究の中で、一つの興味深い現象を見つけました。周囲の方々から「これはすごい」、「この技術でぜひ起業すべきだ」と背中を押され、私はその言葉をそのまま信じて起業しました。けれども今振り返ると、私は最も大事な問いをほとんど考えていませんでした。それは、「この技術は誰に対する、どんな課題を解決するのか」、「世の中の誰が、その価値に対して本気で応援しようと思うのか」という問いです。

　その当時、私は人と会うたびに、自分の技術が優れていると思う点ばかりを熱心に語っていました。しかし今考えれば、私は技術の話をしているのに、相手は社会的な価値の話を聞こうとしていた。いやそれだけではありません。私自身がそれを成し遂げる覚悟があるかを見抜こうとしていた——その大きな違いに気づいていなかったのです。結果として、会社としての成長と私の情熱は、なかなか噛み合うことがありませんでした。

　そんな苦闘の中のある日、私は、スタンフォード大学を背景にイノベーション創出を推進してきたアメリカの研究機関、SRI Internationalの方々と話をする機会に偶然恵まれました。数々のイノベーション実現の経験とそれを目指すための明確な戦略性のある話は、当時の私にとって大変斬新であり、強く心を打たれたものでした。

そしてそこで強く言われた言葉があります。
　「技術の内容より先に、それが社会にもたらす本当の価値を語ること」
　「そして、なぜそれが自分なら実現できるのかをもう一度考えてみること」
社会に届ける価値こそが重要であり、それを人の心に届く形で語れなければ、どんなに独創的な技術であってもそれは生かされない。論理の正当性だけでは不十分であり、それが説得力となって力強く姿を顕わさなければならない。私はそこで初めて、自分の未熟さに気づきました。

　この経験を通じて、私の考え方は大きく変わりました。技術はもちろん大切です。深く探究し、新しい知を生み出すことは極めて重要です。しかし、それだけでは社会は動きません。

社会を動かすために本当に必要なのは、
　· 絶対に成し遂げるという覚悟
　· 応援してくれる人への敬意と信頼関係
　· 託された期待に応えようとする責任感
といった、人との関係の中で育まれる力です。

　スタートアップのようなまだまだ未完成の中から挑戦し続ける組織は、技術の限界よりも、むしろ人間関係によって崩れることが少なくありません。互いの強みを理解しないこと、尊重しないこと、対話を怠ること——そうした小さな亀裂が、やがて大きな崩壊につながります。だからこそ、「一緒に働く人の大切さを理解すること」は、何より重要なのだと学びました。

　そして、どんなに素晴らしいと思うことであっても、新たな挑戦には必ず外からの圧力があります。市場からの厳しい評価、既存の考え方との摩擦、思うように進まない現実。そのような状況を一人で乗り越えることは、ほとんど不可能です。努力と同時に、チームの力が不可欠です。振り返れば、学術研究から始まったスタートアップ経営の経験は、想像を超えるほど私を鍛えてくれました。失敗も迷いも含め、そのすべてが今の私を支える力になっています。

　皆さんはこれから新たな研究の段階に進む人もいれば、大学を出ていよいよ社会で活躍する人もいます。いずれにしても、正解のない時代です。不安を感じることも、迷うこともあるでしょう。そんな時、どうか思い出してください。知識や技術は、誰かの役に立ってこそ意味を持つということを。一人ではなく、仲間とともに歩むことの大切さ。そして、信頼を積み重ねることこそが、人生における最大の財産になるということです。

　皆さんには、この大学・大学院で培った確かな力があります。考える力、学び続ける力、そして挑戦する勇気です。私は、皆さんを心から信頼しています。どうか自分の可能性を信じ、失敗を恐れず、社会に価値を届ける人生を歩んでください。

　皆さんのこれからの活躍を心から願い、本日の晴れやかな門出を祝して、私からのお祝いの言葉といたします。

Farewell Address

 Dear graduates and program completers,
 Congratulations! 

 Each of you has accumulated many experiences, tackled important challenges, devoted yourselves to research and learning, and achieved a significant goal throughout your university life. I offer my deepest respect and heartfelt congratulations on your new beginnings.

 Graduation and completion mark an unforgettable milestone in your lives, representing a new starting point for your future journeys. You will continue to face significant turning points, each of which will require you to make decisions based on your own will as you move forward.

 I have experienced several major crossroads in my own life. One such moment occurred about twenty years ago when I founded a startup based on my research achievements as a university professor. However, to be perfectly honest, I would not hold this up as a model for you. Looking back now, it was a reckless challenge that began with nothing but flaws and imperfections—a journey filled with lessons to be learned.

  While researching chemical reactions in my field of expertise, I discovered an intriguing phenomenon. Encouraged by those around me who said things like "This is amazing" and "You should definitely start a business with this technology," I took their words at face value and launched my venture. In hindsight, however, I realize that I barely considered the most crucial questions: The questions are, "Who is this technology for, and what problem does it solve?" and "Who would genuinely want to support it for its value?"

 Back then, I would eagerly tell everyone I met about the aspects of my technologies that I thought were exceptional. Looking back now, I realize that, while I was talking about my chemistry, others were trying to hear about its social value. No, it wasn't just that. They were trying to see if I had the resolve to achieve my goals. I didn't notice that difference. As a result, the company's growth and my passion rarely aligned.

 During that time, I had the opportunity to speak with people from SRI International, an American organization rooted in Stanford University that drives innovation. Their ability to realize numerous innovations and their clear strategic approach to achieving them was highly novel at the time and made a deep impression on me. There was a phrase that resonated strongly with me then:

"Before discussing the technical details, talk about the value it brings to society."
"Then, think again about why you specifically can make it happen."

 What truly matters is the value we deliver to society. Even the most original technology will never come to life if we cannot communicate its value in a way that resonates with people's hearts. Demonstrating logical validity alone is insufficient; it must transform into persuasive power and manifest itself forcefully. Only then did I realize my own immaturity.

 This experience profoundly changed my perspective. Technology is important, of course. Deep exploration and the creation of new knowledge are also extremely important. However, that alone will not move society forward.

What's truly needed are the strengths cultivated through human relationships.
• The determination to achieve it absolutely.
• Respect and trust for those who support me.
• A sense of responsibility to live up to the expectations placed on me.
 Startups and other organizations that persistently operate in an unfinished state often collapse not due to technological limitations, but rather because of human relationships. Failure to understand each other's strengths, failure to respect one another, and neglecting dialogue are small cracks that eventually lead to a major collapse. That's why I learned that "understanding the importance of the people you work with" is paramount.

 No matter how important the endeavor, new challenges always come with external pressure. Examples include harsh market scrutiny, friction with existing mindsets, and realities that don't unfold as planned. Overcoming such situations alone is nearly impossible. Alongside individual effort, a strong team is indispensable. Looking back, my experience managing a startup that began with research far exceeded my expectations. Every failure and moment of doubt has become the foundation supporting me today.

 Some of you are about to advance to a new stage of research, while others are graduating and stepping into the workforce for the first time. Either way, this is an era without clear answers. You may feel anxious or uncertain at times. When that happens, please remember this: Knowledge and skills only hold meaning when they benefit someone else. It's important to walk alongside companions, not alone. Also, building trust is the greatest asset one can possess in life.

 You have cultivated solid abilities at this university and graduate school: the ability to think critically, the ability to continue learning, and the courage to take on challenges. I have complete faith in you. Believe in your potential, don't fear failure, and pursue a path in life that adds value to society.

 I sincerely wish you success in your future endeavors. With these words of congratulations, I celebrate your bright new beginning today.
