Research Center for Science and Technology (Gene Research Center, Instrumentation Analysis Center, Facility Support Office)

Information on the Research Center for Science and Technology (Gene Research Center, Instrumentation Analysis Center, and Facility Support Office).

Research Center for Science and Technology Overview

The Research Center for Science and Technology is comprised of the Instrumentation Analysis Center and the Gene Research Center. The Instrumentation Analysis Center offers educational programs that focus on learning the theory and construction of equipment and devices, the use of technology, and hands-on practice using actual test samples to cultivate talented individuals equipped with advanced skills and techniques in this area. The Gene Research Center engages in safety management to prevent experiments in genetic modification and the use of genetically modified organisms from affecting biodiversity, as well as research and development concerning analysis and genomic technology. Through these institutions, the Research Center for Science and Technology aims to comprehensively develop and enhance TUAT's capabilities for promoting and supporting academic research and advance education and research at the university.
TUAT established the Facility Support Office in September 2011 within the Research Center for Science and Technology with support from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. The goal is to institute a management system for shared equipment at TUAT, make more effective use of limited resources, and promote the development of our education and research environment.

Gene Research Center

Established in 1994 and reorganized as an institution within the Research Center for Science and Technology in April 2008, the Gene Research Center engages in education, research and development regarding genetic modification experiments and the use of genetically modified organisms. It also offers education and training in their safe management.
This facility has genetic experiment labs for all containment levels (P1 through P3) of genetically modified organisms, radioisotope labs, DNA extractors, next-generation and capillary DNA sequencers, mass spectrometers, fluorescent imaging equipment, radioisotope imaging equipment, preparative ultracentrifuges, scintillation counters, confocal laser microscopes, electron microscopes, particle guns, etc. Both TUAT personnel and outside parties can use the facility, and the Gene Research Center holds classes for working adults and promotes joint research with other universities and corporations.

Instrumentation Analysis Center

Established in 1991 and reorganized as an institution under the Research Center for Science and Technology in April 2008, the Instrumentation Analysis Center offers educational programs that focus on learning the theory and construction of equipment and devices, the use of technology, and hands-on practice using actual test samples to cultivate talented individuals equipped with advanced skills and techniques in this area.
This facility has nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectrometers, mass spectrometers, single crystal structure analyzers, powerful multipurpose X-ray diffractometers, transmission and scanning electron microscopes, surface analyzers, X-ray micro analyzers, and X-ray diffractometer for thin film materials, etc. To promote the efficient use of shared equipment at TUAT facilities, the center focuses on education and research analysis using equipment at large-scale facilities. The use of key test equipment at TUAT is centrally managed. The center also teaches individuals to use this test equipment properly, and provides coordination for the use of large and unique test equipment installed at other research institutions both in Japan and around the world.
Finally, the Instrumentation Analysis Center holds classes on joint equipment use at nearby universities with the aim of promoting reciprocal usage of test instruments.

Facility Support Office

Established under the Research Center for Science and Technology in September 2011, the Facility Support Office engages in the following activities with the aim of streamlining our management system for the joint use of TUAT equipment, more effectively using limited resources, and developing TUAT's education and research environment:
1. Strengthening technological support for jointly used equipment and establishing education programs on equipment operation
2. Constructing a management database for jointly used equipment, and planning for the reuse and disposal of this equipment
3. Building an equipment management system that shows the operational status of jointly used university equipment, reservations, usage approval, fee collection and maintenance budgets
We will construct this equipment management system based on using the National Institutes of Natural Sciences' Inter-University Network for Common Utilization of Research Equipments.
