Institute of Engineering [Research Institution]
Introduction of the Institute of Engineering [Research Organization].
Message from the Dean
Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology Graduate School Institute of Engineering was reorganized into its current organization in 2010 based on the predecessor of the Graduate School of Symbiosis Science and Technology, which was established in 2004 with the incorporation of a national university. Since then, we have consistently promoted creative research based on free ideas while responding to academic development and the needs of society, with engineering and other fields at the core of our research and education.
And in April 2026, Institute of Engineering will carry out organizational reforms to take a new leap forward.
We will establish nine departments: Division of Biotechnology and Life Science, Division of Biomedical Engineering, Division of Applied Chemistry, Division of Applied Physics and Chemical Engineering, Division of Mechanical Systems Engineering, Division of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, Division of Health Science, Division of Mathematical Sciences, and Division of Language and Culture Studies, and reorganize and strengthen the research system. The Faculty Member of the Graduate School belongs to each department and is responsible for the education of departments and majors, and promotes research and education as one. This will enable both academic deepening and human resource development at a higher level than ever before.
The world is now at a turning point in values. We have made a major shift from an era that only pursues economic growth to an era that puts sustainability, including the environment, resources, health, and security at the center. Institute of Engineering is not afraid to lead this change. We will make the most of our university's proud "power of the fusion of engineering and agriculture" to solve global issues such as food, carbon neutrality, energy, robotics, AI, and life sciences. With a view to basic research, social implementation, and even commercialization, we will continue to lead the way in a modern society where science and technology and business are close by vigorously developing research that transforms knowledge into real value.
In addition, even as the environment surrounding universities across the country becomes increasingly severe, we will accelerate the development of systems and environments aimed at maximizing research effort in order to simultaneously improve the quality and quantity of research. In the 2026 QS World University Rankings, our university was ranked fifth in Japan in terms of "Faculty Member number of papers per capita", and its high research capabilities have already gained solid trust both domestically and internationally. However, we will not rest on our compassions and will move forward as a world-class research university to achieve even greater heights.
Based on the university's philosophy of "Becoming a Research Pillar University that Transcends Scale through the Power of Two-University Convergence: Nurturing Seeds for the Future Together," Institute of Engineering and Institute of Agriculture will work together to create knowledge that is directly linked to solving social issues. In order to further enhance the international presence of the university, we will actively support publications in high-impact international journals and continue to promote measures to further accelerate international exchange and joint research.
The land of Koganei, where Institute of Engineering is based, functions as a school city, but is also a village of spring water that retains the traces of Musashino. As a "fountain of knowledge" that springs up and never runs dry, we will continue to provide new value to society and continue to illuminate a corner of the international community.
Knowledge that opens up the future to society and the world. Institute of Engineering moves forward without stopping us from creating and taking on challenges.
Dean of the Institute of Engineering, Masafumi HIRANO
