Recently, there have been a series of bear sightings in urban areas and other areas where people live in various regions, and cases of human casualties have been reported.
As a result, there is a need for measures to ensure safety in the event of bear sightings.
We at our university will also be issuing safety alerts to faculty, staff, and students who are engaged in educational and research activities outdoors (such as in the university forest) or extracurricular activities in natural environments. In particular, when engaging in activities in areas close to bear habitats, such as mountainous or forested areas, we ask that you check for bear sightings and take sufficient precautions.
■Examples of eligible activities
・Outdoor exercises, training, fieldwork, etc.
・Extracurricular activities by student groups (club activities, circle activities, etc.)
What to do if you encounter a bear
If you notice a bear in the distance, stay calm and quietly move away from the area.
If you notice a bear nearby, stay calm and put some distance between you and the bear, such as by slowly backing away while watching the bear.
・If you suddenly encounter a bear at close range, there is a high possibility that the bear will react violently, such as by directly attacking you. Since attacks are often directed at the face or head, it is important to cover your face and head with both arms and immediately lie face down to minimize serious injury or fatal damage. If you are carrying bear repellent spray,
It will spray towards you.
・If you encounter a mother bear with her cubs, be careful as the mother bear will often be aggressive. Even if the cubs are alone, there is a high chance that the mother bear is nearby, so leave the area immediately.
・It is important to spray bear repellent spray in the bear's face only after attracting the bear sufficiently. Practice using it in advance and keep it handy in a place where you can use it immediately in case of an emergency.
