The situation surrounding higher education is currently undergoing major changes.
In order to respond to the declining population of 18-year-olds, the increasing learning needs of society as a whole, such as lifelong education, and the rapid progress of internationalization and information-based society, reforms are underway for the first time since the new university system was established.
In particular, with regard to the content of education, in response to the broadening of the standards for establishing universities, efforts are being made to reform the curriculum and improve educational policies, aiming to enrich the unique education of each university, taking advantage of its own particular characteristics.
As one example, it is well known that recently, in exchange activities such as the conclusion of mutual exchange agreements between foreign universities and domestic universities, credit transfer systems have been actively promoted.
This credit transfer system is a new direction in higher education that aims to stimulate students' intellectual curiosity, foster independence in their studies, and develop a diverse range of talent with different inclinations through a single educational process by providing students with the opportunity to take a variety of courses in different academic environments.
The direct purpose of this system is to expand learning opportunities for students and promote interaction between students, but it is also hoped that indirectly, exchanges between universities through education will have a positive impact on improvements to educational policies and research exchanges at each university.
The five national universities in the Tama campus, Tokyo University of Foreign Studies, Tokyo Gakugei University, Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology, University of Electro-Communications, and Hitotsubashi University, are all unique universities with their own distinctive histories, traditions, and educational programs. They are also geographically close to each other, making them ideal conditions for launching a credit transfer system.
Here, we five universities have decided to enter into an agreement and implement a credit transfer system in the hope that each university's educational curriculum will produce more effective results, while looking ahead to higher education in the 21st century.
