Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology

Visionary Program for Science Researchers

the purpose:

1) Revitalizing innovation in science and technology in Japan.
② Cultivating innovation leaders who can promote and sustain value creation based on research results and business development for companies both in Japan and overseas.

outline

Modern society is faced with many big problems. While it is difficult to solve these problems easily, there is also the potential for big business. If we can achieve challenging business development that leads to solutions, it will lead to the development of the earth and humanity.
In this program, we foster through lectures and group work the knowledge, understanding, communication skills, and practical skills required in the process of turning research results and ideas into science-based businesses. (Basic course)
Furthermore, those who wish can learn practically about the process of commercializing a company's problem together with corporate researchers (Advanced course).

This program is an add-on program that allows students to learn how to apply the high level of research skills and expertise they have acquired in specialized education courses (Faculty & Graduate Schools) to society.

Course Overview

Basic course:

Students will learn the basic knowledge necessary for implementing technology in society (patents, ethics, law, marketing, presentations, social sciences, etc.). They will also gain experience in launching and promoting projects through creating business plans. Teams selected based on their presentations will have the opportunity to participate in overseas training.

Those who have not previously participated in the educational programs hosted by our institute, such as "Practical Research Leaders," "EDGE Program," and "Doctoral Visionary Program," are required to take this course.

Advanced Courses:

Those who complete the Basic course can, if they wish, work with young researchers from the company to verify their business hypothesis and create a prototype. They will then repeatedly review their plan while receiving advice from experts. The final team selected will then increase the feasibility of their plan through training at SRI International.

Those who have previously taken the educational programs "Practical Research Leaders," "EDGE Program," and "Doctoral Visionary Program" organized by our organization are eligible to take this course.

Eligible (both courses)

Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology, University of Electro-Communications, Tokyo University of Foreign Studies (Master's and Doctoral Programs, Undergraduate), Postdoctoral Fellows, Corporate Participants

Can Tho University Training (Vietnam) 2019/12/7-2019/12/13

As part of the overseas training for the Basic course, we conducted a training program at Can Tho University. At Can Tho University, we held a "Business Idea Workshop" based on science and technology, and proposed a business plan in collaboration with local students. In addition, we heard about the process of Japanese companies successfully expanding overseas at the Acecook Ho Chi Minh factory, and at the Binon Cocoa Park, we observed the entire process from cocoa production to chocolate manufacturing.
Participants: 14 TUAT, 1 student from the University of Foreign Studies, and 2 faculty members.

SVA Innovation Training (USA) 2019/12/3-2019/12/9

As part of the Advanced course's overseas training, a 2.5-day training program was held by SVA Innovation. Under the guidance of entrepreneurial and management professionals, the participants learned about the principles of innovation based on the SRI method, while practically examining and discussing the issues and improvement measures in each group's business plan from every angle. In addition, they had the opportunity to visit Stanford University and take part in independent training in and around San Francisco, allowing them to observe the local area from a broader perspective. Participants: 7 students, 9 corporate trainees, 3 Faculty Member

Science and Technology Ecosystem Forum (Yugawara) 2019/9/13-2019/9/14

A total of about 70 people, including 50 students of the Visionary Program for Science Researchers (38 TUAT Technology, 4 students from the University of Foreign Studies, and 8 corporate trainees), mentors, judges, and staff from our organization, gathered together, and 12 teams of students presented and competed for selection for overseas training.

Participant comments

Participating in the Doctor Visionary Promotion has changed my view of business. Until then, I had the image of "business = entrepreneurship" and thought it was a world that had nothing to do with me as a job seeker, but participating in this project has allowed me to concretely envision myself after getting a job. Even now that I'm actually working for a manufacturer, I still feel that it's important to think from the perspective of "how to link research to product development and to a business that delivers products to consumers." In addition, through the Doctor Visionary Promotion, I was able to meet many passionate colleagues. I feel that the time I spent discussing and spending with the members who came up with the business related to microbial fermentation together with me, the members who accompanied me on the training in Vietnam, and the students at Can Tho University was truly valuable. I would definitely recommend this course to anyone who wants to devote themselves to something while they're a university student!
