学長告辞

　本日、東京農工大学大学院連合農学研究科を修了され、博士の学位を授与された皆さん、誠におめでとうございます。皆さんの長年にわたる弛まぬ努力によって、この佳き日を迎えられましたことを、心よりお慶び申し上げます。

　本学における研鑽の日々は、静かに、しかし確実に、皆さんを鍛え上げてきました。未知への畏れと向き合い、仮説を立て、事実と対峙し、真理を探究する――その歩みは、誰にも代わることのできない、唯一無二の旅であったと思います。本日授与された博士号は、その困難な道のりを乗り越え、一つの目標を成し遂げた者にのみ与えられる、極めて重い証であります。

　こうして博士号を取得された皆さんを前にすると、私自身も博士の学位を取得し、新たな目標に向かって歩み始めた頃のことを、つい昨日のことのように思い出します。それは、もう今から35年以上も前のことになります。私は修士課程を修了後、一度企業で働きながら基礎研究にも携わり、その後、再びアカデミアの世界に戻り、博士号を取得し、以来東京農工大学において教育研究に従事するという縁に恵まれました。当時は、少し回り道をしたという思いもあり、自分はこの学術の世界で本当にやっていけるのだろうか、自分だからこそできる研究の軸をどのように築いていけばよいのだろうかと必死に考え、試行錯誤を重ねる日々でありました。思うように独自の成果を出せないまま、時間だけが過ぎていき、焦りと不安に苛まれた時期もありました。時間というものは、これほど早く過ぎるのか、何も成し遂げられていないではないかと、自問する日々であったことを、今でも鮮明に覚えています。

　そのような中でほんの少しの道筋が見え始めた頃、ある学会の懇親会で、一人の著名な先生が近くにおられたので、思い切ってご挨拶を申し上げました。すると、その先生は､見知らぬ私の研究発表の要旨も事前に丁寧に読んでくださっており、「あれは良い研究だ。君自身の発想で始めたのだね。」と声をかけてくださいました。自分の着想による研究を、遠くで誰かが見ていてくださること。そして、直接励ましの言葉をいただけたことは、私にとって何よりの喜びであり、その後の研究人生を支える大きな原動力となりました。一方で、私は今でも反省しています。あの先生のように、これから羽ばたこうとする若い研究者一人ひとりの努力に目を配り、その芽を見つけ、励まし、背中を押す存在に、自分は十分になれているだろうかと。

　研究者は、ともすれば自分自身の研究に目が向きがちです。しかし、学術コミュニティにおいて果たすべき役割は多様であり、互いの力を高め合うことこそが、研究の発展を支える基盤であると、改めて感じています。皆さんはこれから、学術研究の道に進まれる方、企業や公的機関で活躍される方など、それぞれの進路において、自らの道を切り拓いていかれることでしょう。しかし、「博士」という称号に伴うものは、単なる専門性にとどまりません。それは、社会に対して極めて重い責任と期待を伴うものです。皆さんが今後さらに研鑽を重ね、新たな価値を創出していく上で、この学位は確かな礎となるに違いありません。同時に、社会が抱える課題、まだ誰も気づいていない自然現象や本質的問題を、自らの洞察力で見つめ、構想し、実行していく力が求められます。

　これからの社会はどうあるべきか。その中で、自分はどのような役割を果たすことができるのか。こうした問いに向き合い、構想力と実践力をもって答えを示していくことこそ、博士に課せられた重要な使命であります。もちろん、その道のりは決して平坦ではありません。予想もしなかった困難に直面することもあるでしょう。しかし皆さんは、学位取得の過程において、思うように進まない経験を数多く積み重ねてこられました。その経験は、どのような壁にも立ち向かう力となり、皆さんを支える大きな財産となるはずです。そしてどうか、時には周囲にも目を向け、互いを認め合い、励まし合える研究者・専門家であってください。

　皆さんの真摯な努力と挑戦する姿勢は、必ずや周囲の人々を惹きつけ、多くの仲間を巻き込み、大きな力となって社会を動かしていくことでしょう。それこそが、真に力ある博士の姿であり、皆さんに目指していただきたい姿であります。

　私は、博士とは、過去と未来を見据え、社会が必要とする本質的課題に対して、信念と責任をもって向き合い、自らの役割を果たすことのできる人であると考えています。いま、学位記を手にされた皆さんが、これからさらに、ご自身でもまだ気づいていない大きな力を発揮され、未来にとって欠かすことのできない存在として活躍されることを、心より願っております。

　皆さんへの大いなる期待を込めて、私からのお祝いの言葉といたします。

Ceremonial Address

Today, we would like to extend our heartfelt congratulations to everyone who has completed the Graduate School of Agricultural Sciences at the Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology and been awarded a Doctor of Philosophy degree. We sincerely celebrate this joyous occasion, made possible by your years of tireless effort.

Your time studying at this university has quietly yet surely shaped who you are today. Confronting the fear of the unknown, formulating hypotheses, facing facts and pursuing truth: this has been a unique and irreplaceable journey for each of you. The doctoral degree conferred today is a significant testament, awarded only to those who have overcome this challenging path and achieved this unique goal.

Standing before all of you who have earned your doctorates, I am reminded of the time when I obtained my PhD and began pursuing new goals, as if it were yesterday. That was over 35 years ago.

After completing my Master program, I worked in industry for a time while conducting basic research. I then returned to academia, earned my doctorate and have since been fortunate enough to be involved in education and research at Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology. At the time, I felt that I had taken a slight detour. I desperately pondered whether I could truly succeed in the academic world, and how I could establish a research focus that was unique to me. It was a period of relentless trial and error. There were times when impatience and anxiety consumed me as time slipped away without producing the desired results. I still vividly remember those days of questioning myself: Does time pass this quickly? Have I achieved nothing?'

During a social gathering at an academic conference, I plucked up the courage to greet a renowned professor who happened to be nearby. Much to my surprise, he had read the abstract of my research presentation carefully beforehand and told me, “That's excellent research. It clearly stems from your own original ideas.'

Realizing that someone far away had noticed research born from my own conception, and receiving direct words of encouragement, was the greatest joy for me. It became a major driving force in my subsequent research career. On the other hand, I still ask myself: Am I fulfilling a role similar to that of the professor, who watches over the efforts of each young researcher, recognizes their potential and encourages them?

Researchers often tend to focus solely on their own work. However, I am reminded that the roles we fulfil within the academic community are diverse and that we build the foundation supporting the advancement of research by enhancing each other's strengths. Each of you will now forge your own path, whether that be pursuing academic research, working in industry or serving in public institutions. Yet the title of 'Doctor' signifies more than mere expertise. It comes with profound responsibilities and expectations towards society.

This degree will undoubtedly provide a solid foundation as you continue to develop your expertise and create new value. At the same time, society expects you to use your expertise to identify, conceptualize and implement solutions to its challenges, including natural phenomena and fundamental issues that remain unnoticed.

What should the future of society look like? What role can I play in it? Doctors are entrusted with the crucial mission of confronting these questions and providing answers through conceptual and practical abilities. Of course, the path ahead will not be easy. You may encounter unforeseen difficulties. However, throughout your journey towards earning this degree, you will have gained experience of situations where things did not go according to plan. These experiences will give you the strength to overcome any obstacle and will be a great asset to you. Please be researchers and experts who occasionally look around, recognize each other and encourage one another.

Your sincere efforts and sense of adventure will undoubtedly inspire those around you, attract many colleagues and drive society forward. This is the true image of a powerful doctorate holder, and it is this ideal that I hope you will strive to embody.

I believe that a doctorate holder looks to both the past and the future, confronting the essential challenges that society demands with conviction and responsibility, and fulfilling their role. I sincerely hope that each of you, now holding your degree certificates, will go on to realize even greater potential — potential that you may not yet fully recognize — and become invaluable contributors to the future.

With these words of congratulations, I express my profound expectations for you all.
