What is Tobitate! Study Abroad initiative?

This is a "study abroad promotion initiative" that is undertaken not only by the government, but through public-private collaboration and involving the entire society.
Compared to existing overseas study support programs, this program has the following features:

  • Scholarships and other support are not only funded by government funds, but are also based on donations from over 160 private companies.
  • In addition to academic study abroad programs that are based on the acquisition of credits, we also support a wide variety of practical activities, such as internships, volunteer work, and fieldwork (for periods of 28 days or more and up to one year).
  • This program is open to students who have Japanese nationality or who have been granted permanent residence in Japan by the time of application.
  • There are no grade requirements (however, the program must be recognized by the university as an educationally beneficial learning activity).
  • Generous financial support is provided, including tuition fees (a fixed amount of 300,000 yen per year), scholarships (120,000 yen or 160,000 yen per month, depending on the region), and study abroad funds (210,000 yen or 350,000 yen).
*If the household income exceeds the standard, the scholarship will be 60,000 yen/month.
  • Support and follow-up on study abroad plans through pre- and post-training.
