Outline of Nature and Science Museum

Nature and Science Museum began in 1886 as a "reference specimen display room" at the Ministry of Agriculture and Commerce's Agricultural Affairs Bureau's Silkworm Disease Testing Station, the predecessor of Faculty of Engineering Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology University of Agriculture and Technology. In 1952, it was designated a "museum-equivalent facility" under the Museum Act, and in 1977, it was organized as the Textile Museum attached to Faculty of Engineering. In April 2008, it was reorganized as a university-wide organization and renamed Nature and Science Museum with the vision of expanding the scope of collection, storage, and exhibition of materials to all fields of engineering and agriculture. Furthermore, on October 2, 2012, the main building was reopened after major renovations, and since then, the number of visitors has exceeded 20,000 per year.
As a specialized museum attached to a university, Nature and Science Museum collects materials of academic value and houses and exhibits a large number of materials that played a leading role in student education or industry during their time.
Nature and Science Museum has a main building (Koganei Campus) and an annex (Fuchu Campus). In addition to its existing exhibition activities centered on textiles, the museum is building a new exhibition room to introduce new discoveries and cutting-edge technologies from the university's research, and aims to serve as an information dissemination base that talks about the university's past, present, and future.
The main building houses ukiyo-e prints, cocoons, and textile machinery on display in working order, all of which are rare in Japanese museums, as well as an education and research exhibition room showcasing the results of research in the university's engineering and agricultural sciences, and a memorial room in honor of Honorable Emeritus Professor Akira Endo, who is famous for discovering statins.
Furthermore, we contribute to student education through our curatorial and technological innovation courses, and we also contribute to educational and cultural activities in the local community through permanent exhibitions, special exhibitions, and special science classes for children, as well as through collaboration with museum support groups such as Nature and Science Museum Friendship Association, the Textile Technology Research Association, and the student group Musset.
