Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology Admissions Policy

Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology is located in Musashino, Tokyo, and its history began in 1874 when Ministry of Home Affairs Agricultural Training School and Sericulture Experiment Section were established as the foundation for Faculty of Agriculture and Faculty of Engineering, respectively, and it was established as a university in 1949. Since its founding, the university has developed into a unique science and technology university unlike any other in the country, focusing on the two academic fields of agriculture and engineering that support agriculture and industry, the backbone of human society, while also embracing a wide range of related fields.
Our basic philosophy is to face head-on the challenges of "realizing a sustainable society" that have been brought to light by 20th century society and science and technology, and to contribute to world peace and the advancement of science and technology in harmony with society and the natural environment through education and research based on free thinking in agriculture, engineering, and their interdisciplinary fields, while also striving to foster the talent and create knowledge that will lead to problem-solving and its realization. We advocate this basic philosophy as "MORE SENSE: Mission Oriented Research and Education giving Synergy in Endeavors toward a Sustainable Earth" clearly defining our existence and role, and working sincerely to solve the problems facing humanity in the 21st century.

Undergraduate Programs

The Ideal Student

Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology respects the independent and independent learning activities of students in its bachelor's degree programs, and fosters human resources who possess the academic knowledge, knowledge, problem-seeking, and problem-solving abilities that are appropriate for a science and technology university.
In accordance with the philosophy of TUAT and the educational objectives of the Faculty of Agriculture and Engineering listed below, we are seeking students with a clear purpose to study at TUAT. In particular, we will accept people from Japan and abroad who are interested in nature and science and technology and who are willing and independent to study.
In order to solve problems in the fields of agriculture, life science, environmental science, and veterinary medicine and to contribute to the formation of a sustainable society, Faculty of Agriculture aims to provide students with broad knowledge, basic expertise, a rich culture, a high sense of ethics, and an international sense, and to foster pioneering human resources who can contribute to human society by building a symbiotic society.
Faculty of Engineering provides students with basic and specialized knowledge and technology related to science and technology in the field of engineering, and fosters a spirit of inquiry into the truth of nature and the ability to discern the essence of problems to be solved. The purpose of the program is to foster human resources with a wide range of education and expertise that can contribute to the realization of a sustainable society, and who are pioneering and full of humanity.
In order to achieve the above objectives, our admission policy requires students who wish to enter the university to have the following qualities, backgrounds and abilities.

Faculty of Agriculture

  • Those who have basic textbook-level knowledge of the major subjects and courses studied in high school, are able to solve problems, and have knowledge, insight, and skills gained from practical and experiential learning in science, mathematics, and English subjects.
  • Someone who can consider and judge the various issues facing humanity from multiple perspectives, organize their own thoughts, and express them in Japanese in a way that is easy for others to understand.
  • Students will be interested in various issues related to food, life, resources, and the environment in local and international communities, and willing to use the knowledge they have acquired to think independently and cooperate and collaborate with others to tackle these problems.

Faculty of Engineering

  • Those who have basic textbook-level knowledge of the major subjects and courses studied in high school, are able to solve problems, and have knowledge, insight, and skills gained from practical and experiential learning in science, mathematics, and English subjects.
  • Someone who can consider and judge the various issues facing humanity from multiple perspectives, organize their own thoughts, and express them in Japanese in a way that is easy for others to understand.
  • Students should have an inquiring mind about the truth of nature and a manufacturing mindset, an interest in science and engineering, and the desire to use the knowledge they have acquired to think independently and cooperate and collaborate with others in order to realize a sustainable society.

Basic policy for student selection

In selecting students, we set the subjects and courses in the entrance examination in accordance with our university's philosophy and the educational goals of our faculties of Agriculture and Engineering, and accept a wide range of students from both Japan and abroad who are motivated and capable of studying independently.
Our university will evaluate the qualities, aptitudes, abilities, etc. required of students using the following methods.

Faculty of Agriculture

■General Selection
  • The evaluation will be based on the combined score of the Common Test for University Admissions and the Individual Academic Ability Test. The school report will be used as a reference material to assess the abilities and aptitude of students from various angles in the faculty or department they are applying to.
  • Basic academic ability will be assessed broadly through the Common Test for University Admissions (five subjects and seven courses required by our university).
  • Individual Academic Ability Test (Early Schedule):
    The test subjects - science (two science subjects), foreign language (English), and mathematics - will verify that you have a thorough understanding of the basic knowledge you have acquired up to high school, and will assess whether you can describe the knowledge logically using correct terminology.
  • Individual Academic Ability Test (later schedule):
    The foreign language (English) subjects assessed will assess the student's English proficiency, which will form the basis of the English reading, writing and communication skills required after enrollment.
■ Comprehensive Selection
  • Seminar Entrance Exam [Department: Department of Environmental and Natural Resource Sciences]
    The application documents (application statement, activity report, and school report), seminar results, interviews, and the results of the Common University Entrance Examination will be evaluated comprehensively. In addition, the application documents, assignment reports, and interviews will be used to evaluate the aptitude for the department of choice and motivation to study, and the applicant evaluation report will be used as reference material. There will be a first and second selection process.
■School Recommendation Selection
  • School Recommendation Type Selection [Implementation Department: All Departments]
    Aptitude and motivation to study in Faculty of Agriculture will be evaluated based on the results of the Common Test for University Admissions, a letter of recommendation from the school principal, a survey letter, and a statement of purpose.
  • School Recommendation Type Selection (Industrial Animal Veterinarian Training Framework) [Department: Cooperative Department of Veterinary Medicine]
    Aptitude and motivation to study in Faculty of Agriculture Cooperative Department of Veterinary Medicine will be evaluated based on the results of the Common Test for University Admissions, a letter of recommendation from the school principal, a survey form, a statement of purpose for applying, and a letter of recommendation from an institution or organization that has established a study fund program for the purpose of securing industrial animal veterinarians or public servant veterinarians.
■Special Selection
  • Entrance Examination for Working Adults [Departments: All departments (except Cooperative Department of Veterinary Medicine)]
    The statement of purpose evaluates the aptitude and willingness to learn in Faculty of Agriculture through academic ability tests, interviews, surveys, etc.
  • Entrance Examination for Privately Financed International Students [Departments: All Departments]
    Applicants will be evaluated on their aptitude and motivation to learn in Faculty of Agriculture based on interviews, Japan examination results for international students, and transcripts.
■ Third-Year Transfer Examination
  • Academic Ability Test Selection [Departments: All departments (except Cooperative Department of Veterinary Medicine)]
    Academic aptitude tests, English (TOEIC, etc.), transcripts, and oral examinations are combined to evaluate aptitude and motivation to study in Faculty of Agriculture.

Faculty of Engineering

■General Selection
  • The evaluation will be based on the combined score of the Common Test for University Admissions and the Individual Academic Ability Test. The school report will be used as a reference material for a multifaceted evaluation of the abilities and aptitude of the student in the faculty or department of their choice.
  • Basic academic ability will be assessed broadly through the Common Test for University Admissions (five subjects and seven courses required by our university).
  • Individual Academic Ability Test (Early Schedule):
    The test subjects - science (two science subjects), foreign language (English), and mathematics - will verify that you have a thorough understanding of the basic knowledge you have acquired up to high school, and will assess whether you can describe the knowledge logically using correct terminology.
  • Individual Academic Ability Test (later schedule):
    The subjects of science, foreign language (English) and mathematics are used to assess the academic ability and basic skills required after enrollment.
■ Comprehensive Selection
  • SAIL Entrance Exam [Implemented in: All departments (except Department of Applied Chemistry)]
    Applicants will be assessed on their curiosity about natural science and technology and their ability to think logically based on their performance in a presentation and interview after the first selection based on their statement of purpose, special activity report, and school report. The applicant evaluation report will be used as a reference material.
■School Recommendation Selection
  • School recommendation selection [Departments: All departments]
    Applicants' suitability and motivation to study in the Faculty of Engineering will be evaluated based on their scores in the Common University Entrance Examination, the principal's recommendation letter, school report, and letter of intent.
■Special Selection
  • Entrance examination for privately funded international students [Departments: All departments]
    Applicants' aptitude for the Faculty of Engineering and motivation to study will be evaluated based on their results in the interview and the EJU. Transcripts will be used as reference material for the evaluation.
■ Third-Year Transfer Examination
  • Recommendation Admission Selection [Implemented in: All Departments]
    The first selection (document screening) will be based on recommendation letters and school records, and the second selection will be an interview. The above selection will evaluate the aptitude and motivation to study at the Faculty of Engineering. Depending on the department (course), a simple basic academic ability test will be conducted, either oral or written, to serve as reference material for the interview on the day.
  • Academic Ability Test Selection [Departments: All Departments]
    Applicants' aptitude for Faculty of Engineering and motivation to study will be evaluated based on a combination of academic examinations, interviews, and transcripts.
  • Special Selection for Working Adults [All departments]
    Applicants' aptitude for Faculty of Engineering and motivation to study will be evaluated based on a combination of academic examinations, interviews, and transcripts.
