International Network (FOLENS E-News No.1/ September 2010): E&R Base in Malaysia/ University Putra Malaysia

The E&R base in UPM is set up in the Center of Excellence for Environmental Forensics.

The Center of Excellence for Environmental Forensics in the Faculty of Environmental Studies, UPM was established on 1st September 2008. This research group comprise of senior researchers in the Faculty. The Center houses numerous state-of-the-art equipments to conduct world-class research in environmental forensics. The research investigates the source and distribution pathways of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) that include hydrocarbons, pesticides, antibiotics, pharmaceuticals and hormones in rivers, lakes and other water bodies, including identification and monitoring of Endocrines Disrupting Chemicals (EDCs) in the environment. The evaluation of the impact of agriculture chemicals on health is also carried out.

Due to multidisciplinary strength of the faculty members, research programs in the Faculty of Environmental Studies are designed to be flexible and multidisciplinary. A major aim is to bring together specialized groups of scholars and professionals from many disciplines to focus their attention on current natural resource and environmental problems. One of our main missions is to become a leading research centre in environmental studies. In order to reach this goal, a comprehensive strategy and plan has to be identified and accomplished. One of the research development strategies in our faculty is to acquire more research funding from both local and international agencies. In addition, efforts to increase publications from academic faculty members in refereed journals and paper work presentation at well-known seminars will be made possible through the acquisition of research funding and strategic cooperation relationship at the international level.

Since the establishment of the Faculty of Environmental Studies, it has received research funding not only from government agencies and organizations but also from international bodies and organizations as well.

Up to date, the faculty members received various numbers of funds such as from Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation Malaysia, Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia, Sabah State Government, The Federal Agriculture Marketing Authority, Academy Sciences of Malaysia, Kurita Water Foundation, Sumitomo Foundation and TWAS-COMSTECH UNESCO.

The faculty is international in nature where most of the students at Master and PhD levels are from the countries like Iran, Nigeria, Indonesia, Iraq and other than local students itself. This reflects that the responsibility of this faculty is not only local, but more to the responsibility of regional and international nature.
