Multi-disciplinary Investigation for Parachute Dynamics
Member
Takayuki Minobe, Kohei Okamura
Purpose
A parachute is widely used in various situation because of the distinguished drag-to-weight ratio.
However, it is not clear how it may be traveled by the effect of the flow and the deformation.
Therefore, the fluid-structure interaction phenomenon are investigated by using experimental studies and
numerical studies in this group. The design optimization for a parachute is final goal.

Purpose
An aneurysm is significant disease that is caused by the deformation of the blood vessel.
It is suggested that the disease can be occurred at the blanched location.
Recently, it is treated by microcoil or stent installation and bypass operation.
We are studying about these treatment from the viewpoint of the fluid dynamics of the blood vessel.

Study of Flow Induced Vibration with Elastic Surface
Flow-induced vibration may be caused around a blunt object by the Karman Vortices.
For example, in an engineering plant or electric power plant, it can cause critical problem
around sensors to check fluid properties, especially when the natural frequency is close to
the vortex shedding frequency. Therefore, we are trying to solve the problem by using elastic surface.
This research is performed by both experimental study and numerical study.

Purpose
Today many researchers are studying about aerodynamics around flapping wing.
The characteristics of the phenomenon is different from one of the conventional fixed wing.
We are trying to exploit the flapping wing aerodynamics to realize vertical takeoff and landing.

Purpose
Collaborative Research with JAXA
Recently, Reusable Vertical Takeoff (RVT) rocket is studied to reduce the operation cost.
It is generally known that large flow separation is occurred in wake of an object at large angle of attack.
In the case of the RVT, the flow feature should be controlled to perform turnover maneuver flight.
Therefore, we validate the flow characteristics around RVT and investigate the realizability.

Aerodynamic Noise around Pantograph in High-speed Vehicle
Collaborative Research with RTRI
Aerodynamic noise is significant problem to realize high-speed vehicle, today.
It is confirmed that a pantograph can be main noise source because it is exposed in high-speed flow.
Then we investigate the flowfield around a pantograph by using flow simulation and wind tunnel experiment
to reduce the aerodynamic noise.
The oscillation of body of a vehicle when it comes into a tunnel is another problem for a high-speed vehicle.
One of the reason why the oscillation is occurred is flow separation from the body of a vehicle.
Therefore, we investigate the precise phenomenon around a vehicle and the mechanism to suppress the oscillation efficiently.
