Dazhu Buddist Grottoes
More than 50,000 carved
sculptures with fragrance of thousand years history.
Dazu Grottoes is located in Dazu County of the mountain area
which is 160 kilometers Northwestern Chongqing City of sichuan Province.
The Dazu Grottoes were first carved at the end of Tang Dynasty and they
were in vogue in Southen Song and Northern Song Dynasty. There were also
some of the products in Ming Dynasty and Qing Dynasty.
Dazu has more than 50,000 statues of the carved sculptures.
Among them the sculptures in Beishan and BaoDingshan are largest in scale
quantities and most excellent in artisty. Dazu carved sculptures are not
only concerned about Buddism but also Taosim and Confusianism. There are
also group art sculptures which are a complex of a shrine of Confusianism,
Sakyam unism and Taosim and some of the sculptures portrayed the historic
figure, people's life at that time and the folk legend. It shows the difference
from the early grottoes art like Dunhuang, Yungang and Longmen which were
famous in the world long before.
