FOLENS E-Letter

International Network (FOLENS E-News No.3/ August 2011): E&R Base in Ghana/ University of Ghana

The University of Ghana has several collaborations with Universities around the world to undertake research. The University of Ghana signed an agreement on the 5th day of March, 2010 with TUAT to undertake environmental monitoring activities under the Field-Oriented Leaders in Environmental Sectors Asia and Africa Program (FOLENS).

The FOLENS office in Ghana has Associate Professor, John Ofosu-Anim, the Acting Dean of the School of Agriculture, as the Chief Coordinator and Dr. Edward Benjamin Sabi as the Coordinator responsible for E&R. Activities undertaken to-date include monthly measurements of pH and EC in water bodies ( underground water - wells, Volta river and the Weija dam) and soil moisture content in a field in the research farm, University of Ghana. Under this program FOLENS Ghana has received pH & EC meters, GPS, soil moisture meter, a Dell laptop, a 500L Standing freezer and an air sampler from the FOLENS office in TUAT to augment scientific research.

The Ghana office hosted Dr. Hirokazu Ozaki in July 2011 to identify and finalize plans to receive 7 FOLENS students and 4 FOLENS staff for environmental training in Ghana.
