As a consequence of changes in society, particularly with regard to the globalization of the world communities and the technological revolution in information and physical distribution, the 21st century sees the emergence of a new economic sphere independent of geographical distance. At a time when life is changing so rapidly, we once again recognize the importance of manufacturing, which has long been a driving force for economic growth and development of Asia, as well as that of the leading-edge information technology which forms the infrastructure of contemporary industries and society. Manufacturing, in which Japan has held competitive edge in the global market, is expected to grow continuously in Asia. "IT for Advanced Manufacturing" is a field in which traditional manufacturing is integrated with cutting-edge information technology at an advanced level. Products and services associated with this field include home electronics, automobiles, mobile terminals, system architecture, and so on. TUAT has been aware of the importance of this field from early on and deemed it urgent to undertake human resource development in Asia. The University has commenced the Asia Engineering School to offer courses for the "Education Program of IT Engineers for Advanced Manufacturing" from the 2008 academic year.

Operated as part of the "Advanced Education Program for Career Development of Foreign Students in Japan" jointly sponsored by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) of Japan, the program is dedicated to facilitating mutual understanding and strengthening economic partnership among Asian countries. Industry and the University make collaborative efforts to provide brilliant students from Asia with opportunities to study in Japan and then to work in Japan as a member of Japanese corporations. Selected students are expected to become leading figures in the global society, playing the role of a bridge between Japan and their home countries in Asia. More specifically, the program is intended to train students to acquire the expertise required for work in the IT for Advanced Manufacturing field, and to gain Japanese language ability and capability of adapting themselves to the Japanese business culture, so as to help find a job at Japanese corporations. The program is open to capable and motivated graduate students of Asian countries, and it aims at allowing those who have completed the program to further enhance their career at Japanese corporations, playing active roles in the Asian and global society, and to contribute to the world economy as well as to the development of global human resources like themselves.

TUAT has accepted a great number of international students from Asia and other regions up to date, and they are now actively playing important roles in Japan and abroad. The University has made substantial achievements in education and research in such fields as information technology, mechanical system engineering, electrical and electronic engineering, and biotechnology. Moreover, TUAT leads industry-academia-government collaboration in Japan (for example, TUAT holds first place in Japan with respect to the number of joint research projects/budgets per faculty). The University also has a long history of offering excellent Japanese language education while establishing international exchange programs with sister universities abroad and long-term industrial internship programs with industry. TUAT provides an ideal environment for the pursuit of education and research and for the students' personal as well as academic development. Students joining the program will be recommended to MEXT by the University as Japanese government scholarship students, and scholarship will be awarded to those successfully passing the MEXT screening.
