President Seizo Miyata For the sustainable development of the country, as outlined by Dr. Hideki Shirakawa, a Nobel Prize winner in 2000 and the national government, research in the following four fields will be of great significance in the 21st century; 1)Biotechnology, which will assist in the prevention and treatment of disease and help in solving future food problems; 2)Information and Communications Technologies, represented primarily by computers, cell phones and the internet; 3)Environmental Science and Resource Science, which are essential to the survival of human kind; 4)Nano-technology (nano-meter scale manufacturing technology) and research on new materials, which will have immense influences on our daily lives. Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology, which consists of the Faculties of Agriculture and Technology on the undergraduate level, is truly unique in that it consists of faculty and produces graduates who work in all the areas of research mentioned above.
The education and research conducted in the Faculty of Agriculture includes the problems of food production and resource managemant, and environmental and health issues. In addition, in the Faculty of Technology education and research is conducted in fields such as molecular biology, soft materials such as macromolecules, fiber information and communications systems, and nano-technology such as micro-mechanics. Also, a great number of professors are renowned in their fields and bring in many grants from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology; the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries; the Ministry of Economy and Industries; and private enterprises. As a result, the research budget per professor is among the highest in Japan.
The institutions for graduate programs consist of Graduate School of Agriculture and Technology, and three other unique and independent graduate schools; the United Graduate School of Agricultural Science, in association with the Universities of Ibaraki and Utsunomiya; the Doctoral Course of the United Graduate School of Veterinary Sciences, Gifu University, in cooperation with Obihiro University, Iwate University and Gifu University; and the graduate School of Bio-Applications and System Engineering (BASE) which researches technological applications of knowledge gained from nature. More than fifth percent of our graduates go on to these graduate schools, and endeavor to discover the essence of kmowledge through practical research. Also, many people who have been previously engaged in private enterprise enter these graduate schools to explore new fields of study. The interaction between these studens who have working experience and the younger students will create great opportunities for produccing new venture businesses in the future.
Tje campuses are located within thirty-minute access from Shinjuku, a central transportation hub in Tokyo. The Faculty of Agriculture is in Fuchu, and the Faculty of Technology is situated in Koganei. On both campuses you can enjoy college life in a quiet environment among beautiful trees.
Owing to past graduates' good performance in their places of work, carrer placement possibilities are good and range from working in government and municipal offices to private enterprise. However, in order to take advantage of this resource, you should develop excellent skills in your specialty area as well as basic knowledge in your field of study. The university provides a broad rang of studies, from fundamentalscientific knwoledge through advanced technology, and also includes language, humanities and social in its curriculum.
Ask yourself what you are interested in and what you would like to do in the future. If your dream is to be a scientist or work with technology that will support the development of the sciences and technologies of the 21st century, I hope that you will begin your part in making that dream come true at our university.
Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology is constantly remaking itself for the benefit of its students, its most precious resource, so that they can enjoy the quality education that every student deserves. To carry the university into the 21st century, the entire staff is every effort to create an environment filled with great energy and hope for the benefit of all students.
Dr. Seizo Miyata
President of Tokyo University of
Agriculture and Technology
