The TUAT Task Force for Kabul University Support (for Afghanistan Rebuilding)

International Symposium Held to Support Afghanistan’s Restoration

An international symposium to support Afghanistan’s restoration entitled “Afghanistan Tomorrow through Education” was held at the Tokyo International Exchange Center (Aomi, Koto-ku) on March 5, 2004 (Fri.).
Jointly sponsored by TUAT and UNESCO, this was the first symposium to be jointly held by a national university and UNESCO regarding education in Afghanistan.
The symposium included remarks by Seizo Miyata, TUAT President, Sadanari Mochizuki, Chairman of the Task Force for Kabul University Support, Dr. Nafis Ahmed of UNESCO, and Yasuhiro Yukimatsu, Head of the International Cooperation Policy Office of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. These were followed by presentations by professors from Japan, Afghanistan, the US, and Germany on the topic of providing support for higher education. The symposium also featured a panel discussion and a lively dialogue about the future prospects for Afghanistan.
It attracted about 200 attendees in the field of education who listened attentively to the various lectures. Overall, the symposium was a great success.
The reception following the symposium featured remarks by Mohammad Younus Qanooni, Afghan Minister of Education, and Shigenori Yano, Deputy Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology.
