Message from the Dean


Seeking talented individuals with the
will to study life,
create new systems and
contribute to the construction of a safe and secure society

 The Graduate School of Bio-Applications and Systems Engineering was established in 1995, fusing the fields of agriculture and engineering with the goal of pioneering new areas of research. On campus, we are referred to by the acronym BASE. In 2010, we established the Cooperative Major in Advanced Health Science as a joint graduate school program with Waseda University. In 2015, the Department of Applied Biological Science was expanded and reorganized as the Department of Bio-Functions and Systems Science (master’s course and doctoral course) and the Department of Food and Energy Systems Science (five-year integrated doctoral course), bringing the school’s number of departments to three. The latter department includes the Leading Graduate School, which promotes a practical science program.

 Following BASE’s launch, the twenty-first century begun, and more than a decade has passed. In this relatively short period, however, significant changes have occurred in every area on a global level, including the natural environment, the economy and society. These changes have also had a serious impact on universities and Japan itself. An unprecedented paradigm shift has occurred, and we need capable individuals able to tackle a diverse array of problems from a broad perspective. To overcome the difficulties occurring in diverse areas and build a safer, more secure society, we need new wisdom in such diverse scientific and technological fields as the environment, energy, food and health.

 The Graduate School of Bio-Applications and Systems Engineering follows the foundational principle of this school—the study of life and the creation of new systems—and seeks talented individuals with the desire to contribute to the creation of that safer, more secure world. The school has assembled a faculty active on the global stage, established leading facilities, and created an environment in which new knowledge can be created and disseminated. The school engages in fulfilling education and research in new fields that fuse and go beyond agriculture, engineering and life science. We have also strengthened ties and cooperation with Sophia University and International Christian University to enhance our ability to communicate on a global level. The Graduate School of Bio-Applications and Systems Engineering opens its doors to undergraduates, working adults, international students and others, and our roster includes graduate students of a diverse range of ages and from many nations.

 My desire is that through the education and research guidance our faculty provides—as well as through hard work alongside other graduate students in their own and other laboratories, collaborative universities, and a variety of people active in the working world—our graduates will soar in the greater world as capable individuals able to resolve the challenges of the day and flourish in a wide array of fields.

Graduate School of Bio-Applications and Systems Engineering Overview

The Graduate School of Bio-Applications and Systems Engineering is an independent graduate school offering two-year master courses and three-year doctoral courses not based on undergraduate study programs. The school cultivates talented individuals who possess advanced expertise, specialized skills and a broad vision combining agriculture and engineering, as well as students and researchers able to conduct research activities independently.
Establishing the Cooperative Major in Advanced Health Science jointly with Waseda University in 2010, and the Department of Food and Energy Systems Science five-year integrated doctoral course in 2015, the school seeks to develop leaders with world-class research and development abilities as well as cross-disciplinary judgement capabilities based on diverse viewpoints.
